Canada and Japan have signed an equivalency agreement for organic products which will enter into force on 1 January 2015.
The CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) examined Japan's organic certification programme. It studied the country's agricultural standards, more commonly known as JAS (Japan Agriculture Standard).
What will change for the two countries?
From 1 January 2015, all certified organic products in Japan and Canada may be sold as organic products in either country. For this to happen, their labelling must state both "JAS" and "Canada Organic". Products must also be dispatched with a document certifying their organic origin.
